DTN COMMENTS: It looks like some cattle buyers are moving to secure
inventory this morning. Indeed, moderate business is evident in parts of the
South with live sales generally $2.00 higher than last week. It would appear
that packers are both short bought and needing to get covered before the
holiday break. News of such spending together with sharply higher futures
should work to gird asking prices elsewhere. In general, steers and heifers
are probably priced around 150.00 in the South and 240.00 plus in the North.
Cattle futures are sharply higher near midsession, supported by aggressive
short covering technical buying and signs of stronger packer spending. Beef
cutouts are slightly higher at midday (252.78 +.05, Select 249.52 +.17) with
light to moderate box movement (43.63 lds of choice cuts, 22.67 lds of
select cuts 16.54 lds of trim, and 14.73 lds of ground).
